Professors

Juan Carlos Caro
Professor · Industrial Engineering
Assistant Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering, Universidad de Concepción. PhD in Health Economics (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) with post-doctoral work at the University of Luxembourg. He studies social vulnerability, parental behavior, malnutrition and early human capital accumulation, focusing on tailored interventions that promote health equity and inclusion among families and communities.

Caroll Beltrán
Professor · Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology
Pharmaceutical Chemist, PhD in Biomedical Sciences. Associate professor at the Department of Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology, School of Pharmacy, Universidad de Concepción, and at the Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, Universidad de Chile. She leads the Immunogastroenterology Laboratory, researching the molecular and cellular mechanisms of the intestinal mucosal immune response underlying brain-gut axis and gut-liver-brain axis disorders, with a personalized-medicine and biopsychosocial perspective aimed at identifying biomarkers for inflammatory bowel disorders, colorectal cancer and MASLD.

Ricardo Flores
Professor · Data Science
PhD in Data Science with expertise in AI, mental health, deep learning for healthcare, and multimodal models involving image, text and audio data. His research applies multimodal deep learning to mental health screening, extracting time series of eye gaze, facial landmarks and facial action units to detect depression. He has published in JBHI, ACM Health, MLHC, IEEE BigData and ICMLA.

Jorge Maluenda
Professor · Psychology, HCI
Psychologist, Master's in Politics and Government, and PhD in Psychology from the Universidad de Concepción. Assistant Professor and Deputy Director of Teaching at the Faculty of Engineering. His research focuses on psychological and social factors that influence learning and academic performance - motivation, engagement and sense of belonging - and on high-quality measurement instruments for people and human processes, and on the factors that influence the adoption and beneficial use of technology.

Mabel Vidal
Professor · Computer Science, AI
Associate Professor at the Universidad de Concepción and faculty member of the PhD program in Artificial Intelligence for the Biobío region. Bioinformatics Engineer and PhD in Computer Science. Her research applies machine learning and deep learning to large-scale sequencing data, emphasizing genetic variation analysis, animal welfare and the impact of environmental change on living organisms. L'Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science awardee (2020) and member of IEEE and Fundación Niñas Pro.

Jérémy Barbay
Professor · Computer Science
Associate professor at the Department of Computer Science (DIICC) of the Faculty of Engineering, Universidad de Concepción. PhD in Computer Science (University of Orsay, 2002), with previous positions at the University of British Columbia, the University of Waterloo and the Universidad de Chile. His main research is the analysis of algorithms and data structures on finer classes of instances than those defined by size - "Adaptive Algorithms (and Data Structures)" - and the application of information technologies to education.
